Our Story

The story of Allbirds began with a simple yet powerful idea: there is always a better way to make things. From its inception, the brand has embraced a philosophy of questioning convention, reimagining materials, and creating footwear that is both comfortable and environmentally responsible. This commitment to continuous improvement is a core value, guiding every decision rather than serving as a fleeting trend or marketing strategy.

Allbirds’ roots trace back to New Zealand in 2007, when former professional footballer Tim Brown began reconsidering the footwear industry he had known firsthand. Frustrated with shoes that relied heavily on synthetic, petroleum-based materials and flashy branding at the expense of comfort and sustainability, he saw an opportunity to take a different approach. Surrounded by New Zealand’s natural landscapes and familiar with its world-renowned Merino wool, Brown envisioned footwear that worked with nature rather than against it.

Years later, in 2014, Brown joined forces with engineer and renewable energy expert Joey Zwillinger. Together, they set out to reinvent how shoes could be designed and made from the ground up. Their shared mission was to create footwear that was not only comfortable and visually appealing but also mindful of the environmental impact typically associated with shoe production. By blending design expertise with scientific knowledge, they began developing materials that were high-performing, sustainable, and responsibly sourced.

In 2016, the duo launched their first product, the Wool Runner, crafted from superfine Merino wool. The shoe stood out for its minimalist design, lightweight feel, and exceptional comfort. It resonated with consumers seeking simplicity, versatility, and everyday wearability. The Wool Runner quickly gained recognition as one of the most comfortable shoes on the market, laying the foundation for a brand with a clear purpose and growing global presence.

From the beginning, Allbirds has looked to natural materials for inspiration, favoring renewable and recycled resources like tree fiber and sugarcane-based foam alongside responsibly sourced Merino wool. Every material choice reflects the company’s broader commitment to reducing environmental impact and making thoughtful, long-term decisions. The focus is on meaningful progress rather than perfection, emphasizing practices that push the footwear industry toward sustainability.

Allbirds’ innovation extends beyond materials. As a certified B Corporation, the company measures success not only through financial performance but also by social and environmental contributions. A data-driven approach informs investments in sustainable tools, systems, and partnerships, helping the brand operate transparently while minimizing its ecological footprint. Collaborations with regenerative wool programs in New Zealand further support efforts to measure and offset emissions at the farm level, accounting for both carbon output and sequestration.

The brand has attracted attention from media, sustainability experts, and health professionals. Podiatrists have highlighted the natural support, breathability, and comfort of the shoes, while broader cultural conversations recognize Allbirds’ role in redefining casual footwear. Today, the company continues to evolve, guided by the same principles that shaped its beginnings: making better products in thoughtful ways, blending comfort, design, and sustainability into everyday life.
